Eight years since the release of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' debut LP, the band has been doing what they do - playing original ska-core - forever, and it's just now becoming popular. The racially-mixed, musically diverse Might Mighty Bosstones first formed in 1985 as the Bosstones (the Mighty Mighty appeared several gig fliers later) around a nucleus of friends with two things in common: roots in the Boston hardcore scene and an appreciation for a much wider range of music, ska in particular.
Surf: We have some visitors that stopped by..Mighty Mighty Bosstones: It's an enormous day out.
Surf: Hello, Dickie and Joe...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Check, one, two. How ya doing? Are we on the air?
Surf: We are on the air so we don't have a delay, no profanity...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I would like to say 'hello' to my friend Cameron, if I could, would that be ok? He's a local guy.
Surf: That's the kid you beat up when you came in here...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, well... you know, it's tough love.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Ahh, if there are any ladies out there, get down here, it's a real sausage fest out there... we'd like to get some ladies in there. There's a real dude thing going on! But it's all right... maybe it's the mud that scares them away, well it increases the ratio... but it's a nice day out there, thank you for having us.
Surf: You are really dressed to impress with that suit...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, I had no idea I was in a horse track...
Surf: So, I was born in Rhode Island and you guys are from...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: You were? Which town?
Surf: Coventry
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I know Coventry. I was actually born in Rhode Island too.
Surf: Were you really?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: at the Roger Williams Hospital...
Surf: But one thing, having come from New England and living in different parts of the country and having an Uncle Dickie...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: You do?
Surf: Yeah.I have an Uncle Dickie and you know I never... the Dickie is a New England thing
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah...
Surf: That's the only place you find it..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: But he's a good guy though, right?
Surf: Oh yeah...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Nine times out of ten ...
Surf: No his kids had the best toys, we loved going over there.. you know we were always asking can we go to Dickie's house?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Well, cause, you know, if you grow up Dick, you really toughen up. It's kind of like a boy named Sue, the old Johnny Cash...
Surf: yeah...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: It toughens you up, you learn how to handle it... you get all the jokes; You got any gum on ya dick? You got a pencil, Dick? You like to pet the dogs, Dick? All those jokes...
Surf: All that stuff
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I was actually named after my grandfather, his name was Bob, but he was a real dick.
Surf: so...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Thank you, I'll be here all week, here's all the dick material
Surf: Lot of brawls, a lot of brawling when you were a kid?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, but I had kids do the fighting for me.. I was a real organizer, I had a small crime syndicate going on.
Surf: You know Marky Mark?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah we know Marky Mark... a few grades behind us coming up though, that guy. He's a little younger, but we still had to kick his a#$ just the same. As you can tell by by my entrance into this place I don't mess around..
Surf: Did you do any wrestling?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, I did a little wrestling.
Surf: You could be a wrestling manger.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: High school wrestling, it was cool, cause most high school wrestling teams don't have gimmicks and he was like throwing objects in the ring...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I was the masked avenger for high school sports, really unique, you know?
Surf: Come out with a chair and break it over the head..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: The whole thing...
Surf: So you guys managed...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I really liked the tights actually in high school...
Surf: Well you look good in anything.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Well, thank you very much, that's nice... do these pants make my a&! look fat?
Surf: I don't know, stand up and let us look...we are on the web if you want to turn around there.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Dick and a&! , I am the champ... thank you very much everybody!
Surf: Dick is short for Richard.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, well thank you, but when you use the word dick around me, please don't use the word short
Surf: Oh.. all right...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Thank you... none of this is funny...
Surf: I'm having a good time.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Good.
Surf: So if that makes anything feel better, we are on the Internet now, so if you would like to moon the audience or anything..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: We are on the Internet? We are? Wow!
Surf: We've got a web camera over there if you want to wave.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I have never really gotten into that Internet stuff, what is that? the world wide web?
Surf: That's right, we are international...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Hooked on line.. pornography.. computers...you got your drive, you got your mouse, all that stuff, right?
Surf: And a web cam...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yep, gotta get out there. I'm not really into computers and I'll tell you why if you are interested, at all.
Surf: I am...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: When I was a kid, they said there would be a computer in every home, computers, there's going to be a computer, you'll have a... so I pictured a robot.. like I thought I was going to have Robby Robot at my house. Once that didn't happen, I was soured on the whole thing.
Surf: See, when I think of computers I think of 1984, and the two minutes of hate and the gray screen telling you what to do.. I'm just scared of them. Same reason I didn't take Calculus.. just scares me.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, you gotta be able to spell, you gotta be able to type, forget that.
Surf: You guys have been around for years and this new record is really catapulting you.. how does it feel to have all the work paying off? Is it any different for you?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Umm, it doesn't feel that much different. Maybe we are simpletons, but we've been happy all the way through it.. we are definitely simpletons..oh yeah, maybe I shouldn't use the word maybe!
Surf: But just to be doing something that you like. It's better than digging ditches or something
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: With people that you like, you know. We travel around with our best friends and go to places that are excited to see us and...
Surf: How do you get along on the road?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Really well.
Surf: You don't get into any knock down drag out brawls or anything?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: No, not with each other..
Surf: Just crowd members?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: (laughing) Strangers... truck stops, we usually like to go into a truck stop and clear those places out. Grab two or three truckers and just pound the pi*$ out of them. I got pi*$ in there, there ya go... who was that fouled mouth boy that you had on???
Surf: So what else has been going on the the Mighty Mighty Bosstones world? You've been touring?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Not too much, going to radio stations and swearing...
Surf: Trying to rack up the FCC fines as much as you can.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: We are actually in the middle of a tour that's on the west coast so this was kind of.. We flew overnight, because 99X has been good to us. So we wanted to show our love.
Surf: Well, thank you. You were just here not too long ago.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, we were out here for the warp tour this summer, which was a great summer.
Surf: In fact I heard you all on the radio when I was driving around but you didn't let out ... you didn't swear as much!
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Naw...
Surf: Well, I am glad that I could be here for this..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, well it was early and I wasn't limbered up.
Surf: Right on.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I like to start cursing around...
Surf: Thanks to Budweiser for sponsoring the 99X Big Day Out.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: But if I could talk briefly about the tour that we're on...would you mind? You know, if I haven't bored the listeners enough? The tour we're on is all Boston Bands. Our friends from Boston, the Drop Kick Murphies, The Amazing Royal Crowns, not to be confused with the Royal Crown Review. They're from Providence but we, well, for the sake of argument say Boston, cause you know...
Surf: Well Rhode Island is still technically part of Massachusetts
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: We could take it over if we really wanted to...
Surf: Yeah, it wouldn't be a big fight... not enough people there
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: So them and Scalla Bim . So that's our tour. We are proud of it.
Surf: So is there a formal name for this tour, like the Boston tea Party or something?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Oh, that would have been good, where were you?
Surf: Thank- you. Well I'll get some royalty checks next year when I do it..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: It's called Boston on the Road, how lame is that? Not very clever really..
Surf: So you are going back to the west coast? You're talking about the west coast tour.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: We are going back to the trailer, I don't know what you're talking about..
Surf: Oh yeah?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah. Trudge through the mud... yeah, we are going back the west coast tomorrow morning...
Surf: And how long is this tour lasting for?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Two months, but tours kinda just bump into each other, we've been on the road for like ten years...
Surf: For years..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah. It's what we do...
Surf: Went through puberty on the road..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: There's usually a tour, a brief dry cleaning session and then another tour..
Surf: A hose down, dry cleaning session and studio time...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yep.
Surf: So what about another record? Have you started thinking about your next record? Or what you're going to do...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah..
Surf: Are you going to take some time off after the tour? You know, go to the Bahamas or something?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Probably not, we'll whip something together, time off is not something we are really good at. We'll put together some shoddy project, send it off to you and hope that you play it. You know, you know the way it works.
Surf: You know, just make the check blank..
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Send it your way and hopefully we will be asked back next year..
Surf: So , in closing, is there anything that you would like to say?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Wow, that was rude... (laughing) unbelievable... you know, I wasn't begging to come over here man... I was chillin out with the big fruit basket you gave me over in the trailer.
Surf: You're the one that said if we're asked to be back next year...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Ahh, I don't know, I could probably weasel my way on to the list next year...
Surf: You think you could kick my A$&?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: (laughing) yeah...
Surf: You think you could take me?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Yeah, I think the Bosstones could, strength in numbers.
Surf: I got Axel, he's pretty tall, he's on my side...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: All of a sudden these people want to go at me. This has turned ugly, gonna have to fight my way out... Listen I got Goldfinger, I got Me First and The Gimmie Gimmes. They are all on my side. I'm down with all those guys. You guys want trouble? You're going to get trouble, allright? Who wants a piece of me now?
Surf: Ahh, not me...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Hey man, thanks for having us.
Surf: Thanks for coming by...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Really appreciate it.
Surf: Taking the stage in a little while.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Hey, if you're not here , come on down, what are you doing? Have a great, great time.. It's not pi**ing rain out, it's nice... I said p**ing again. I'm so naughty!
Surf: Any other thing you think you could slip in before we go to commercial?
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: I don't know...
Surf: You said everything really...
Mighty Mighty Bosstones: No, I don't want to get you in trouble, no more swears, no sh#!... allright I'm outta here...
Surf: Allright. Two minutes away from more 99X music. Thanks a lot man.
